[HOWTO] RPI & Pixhawk with 4g Cell, Video & Telemetry

Hi Bernt,
due to the many interference problems I have with my old 35hz radio system, as already mentioned in another post, and at the fact that for this reason I have risked to crash my hexacopter, I have decided that the moment to buy a modern 2.4Ghz radio has arrived.

I have looked around and the ideal one to use with the Pixhawk should be the FrSky X9D, but at the moment I can't find it in Europe. What radio are you using and what do you advice to buy? I already have the 3dr PPM encoder, so even it is not PPM-sum, it should not be a problem.

I have been swore by Futaba my hole life, so my current radio i Futaba 12FG. 🙂 Taranis is a great radio, and probably the best option you get for a reasonable price. Im thinking of getting one myself.

I was re-creating this project, started 2 weekends ago and proceeding today. What a surprise to read your post containing the full image of UAVcast!! Great work! Will try this now!

First some soldering on the hardware setup must be done.
Have a question about the TTL to UDP converter, have the same unit you advised: http://www.usriot.com/Product/20

But how do I set this unit to the UDP-server mode? You mentioned this in your post, but no further instructions on this or how to wire up or which software to use to change mode. I found some software: USRvcom, is this the way to go?

Thx for all your work so far on this project! Hope to have my plane flying on UAVcast soon now!

Hi Rene.
Thank you. Just download and install the programming tool and connect the converter using a standard Ethnernet cable to your computer. Press Search tab and your converter should be listed. Assign the converter an unique ip address in the same subnet as for the RPI.

Gateway and Destination should be the RPI address.

btw: why is the UAVcast image so big? ...only have 8GB and 64GB sd cards lying around... ;-)

I know that image is very large. I need to find a way to compress it.
I will recommed to just use the Install-Script instead, with a fresh Wheezy image, its basically the same thing.

I was working on my setup again today and having trouble to get the TTL to UDP working.
I configged the TTL module conform the screen above, all good.
I connect the TTL module to eth0/ethernet on RPI, I suppose I have to config IP settings for et0 manually?? I put eth0 to static and IP address settings according to GW/remote to TTL module. BUT.

eth0 keeps comming up with 'no IP' hence a 167.xxx.xxxxx address...
meaning the eth0 config I set in 'interfaces' file. I put the TTL on 192.168.2.5 and try to set eth0 to 192.168.1.10. In TTL settings software I configured TTL module to remote and GW address: 192.168.2.10.

However I DO see traffic on eth0 in ifconfig. But route to UPD ande GCS is noGO...

You never mentioned exact settings for TTL/eth0 or how these are supposed to communicate. Is the way I try it the right way?

You are right, i did not explain this is depth.. 🙂
Set your RPI with static ip, e.g 192.168.1.10 Then you need to set TTL adpater with an ip in the same subnet as the RPI. e.g 192.168.1.2

Set gateway and destination in TTL adapter with IP of the RPI. You should now be able to ping TTL from RPI ping 192.168.1.2

After few weeks, I received many interresting things and now I am installing mavlink as Mattiao did.
I am following this procedure ( http://dev.ardupilot.com/wiki/raspberry-pi-via-mavlink/ ) and have a issue whan I launch screen -x : I see a lot of caracters on my screen continually added..

Is someone able to tell me if it is normal ?

Could you advise me about the compass to buy for Pixhawk please ?
Do I have any more sensor to add on top of Pixhawk ?
On this picture ( http://copter.ardupilot.com/wiki/advanced-pixhawk-quadcopter-wiring-chart/ ) we can see that Pixhawk is powered from the power module whereas in my installation, I power it from the RPI. Do you think that it is beter to do it from the power module in order to not warm the RPI ?
Now I will order the engines in line with my 3C lipo. Do you have any advise about the ESC to use ? Thanks a lot for your help.

You cannot transcode gstreamer to Mission Planner HUD directly. You could however use the HUD plugin created by Pattrick Duffy

Im using the GPS / Compass delivered by 3DR. Power module also gives you Voltage and Amps usage feedback to your GCS, so i would definitely recommend to use this module, and it would also give you kind of Redundancy if you got any issues with the Power Supply.

Some time ago there was disscussion related HUD application ( Sinamics ). Can you let me know what should i put in pipeline field to make it running ? I did put the same line as gstreamer on PC but it does not work.
Sorry ... one more ... I cannot run plugin , i do not know how to run is well. I did instal snadalone version and also have android client app.

As described in Sinamics you cannot use gstreamer directly with Mission Planner. You need to follow the instructions from Patrick Duffy

You can use VLC player to transcode into Mission Planner, but you get approx 1sec or more lateancy with VLC.
I will recommend to use the software developed by Patrick and run that as described at his post

Hi all
My quad is ready to use except one very importabt part : esc calibration.
Actually use afro with simonk firmware 30A.

I understood the calibration process but I can't calibrate my esc by this way knowing that I use a PS3 Remote controle. So I can use this remote only throught mission planner and so through Pixhawe. But when you start Pixhawk in calibration mod, it is not able to be connected to mission planner so I Cant use my remote and Change the throlle from high to down as required.

Do you have an idea how I can calibrate Esc with Ps3 remote controle ?

Hey.
Just want to know if i use the APM 2.6 flight controller would i still have to follow the same exact steps when compared to the pixhawk? I just want to setup a drone to be able to controlled via 3G. So this article was spot on. Just need your help in finding out if i can do these same steps with the APM FC.

@Sinamics Then we need to add this to startup script, so we dont need to start inadyn manually.
Type this syntax, just before the exit 0.

vi /etc/rc.local

add this line

/usr/sbin/inadyn &

please sir can you help me out with the above...
vi /etc/rc.local is a readonly file so where to add (/usr/sbin/inadyn & ) line.

Hi Bernt,
I understand that in order for one to assign a static IP to the RPI on the latest Raspbian release, rather than modifying the etc/network/interface file, now we are instead pointed to modifying the DCHP file.

Can you please help me with suggested values for the below three addresses I will input into the DHCP file? I don't know what static routers, or what static domain_name_servers means, or why I need these. Perhaps I don't need them?

#Custom static IP address for eth0.

interface eth0
static ip_address=  192.168.0.200/24
static routers=  192.168.0.1
static domain_name_servers=  192.168.0.1

Static Routers is your gateway, use your router IP.
Static domain name server is your DNS address. Use your router IP.

You will need them if you want your RPI to be connected to internet.

Does the script above redirect to my TTL converter, and the script below redirects to my groundstation?
Also, I don't find udp-redirect in root, but I find it in home/pi (should the last line below be modified?)
